about

This is a song I struggled to write. It is about my father, who passed away out of the blue. He was an incredibly hard working man, who did everything he could do to keep a roof over head and keep food on the table.
As a logger in Maine...you are not going to get rich....but you can get by. I used to love going to work with him when I was a kid. Watch the machinery drag monster trees out of the woods, listen to the chainsaws, and smell the pines, sawdust, and diesel.

lyrics

"His cotton field was a hemlock grove
I can still smell the sawdust and the diesel smoke.
A sip of brandy now to end the day...
He didn't feel like working anymore, anyway.
Time to take the back roads, just to see where they go
Been driving them for years, so he already knows
The FM radio doesn't work out that far
Guess it's just a product of who and where you are

And we still like to see where all those back roads go
Beer between our legs, static on the radio
The simple life ain't easy, and no back road's paved in gold....
But let's see where it goes

Looking out the window, it's amazing what you see
Maybe next winters meat, maybe next years Christmas tree
But you never see a person, at least not on who wants to be found
And it's his idea of heaven, with two feet on the ground

And we still like to see where all those back roads go
Beer between our legs, Willie Nelson on the radio
The simple life ain't easy, and no back road's paved in gold....
But let's see where it goes
